"Here are some facts I believe are important to someone looking for a Jeweler they can trust. So if you like me are interested in knowing the facts please read on". Doug- D&V Jewelers
Ever take a piece of jewelry in to have it cleaned and checked, usually for free.
The sales person comes back with a serious look and informs you that there are some problems with your jewelry that you need to take care of right away. They then proceed to explain how the stones are loose or the prongs are in need of rebuilding. Somewhere in the back of your mind you have a gnawing suspicion that they say this to everyone whether it's totally true or not. How can I be sure? How can I make an informed decision? They offer you a jewelers loupe, which is cumbersome at best to use or possibly a microscope which is just as uncomfortable. I can only imagine how uneasy you feel. If I could just know for sure. How much do I trust these people.... are they just trying to "sell" me on the repair?
What we do, at D&V is bring the jewelry image up on the computer screen using our state of the art camera/lightbox as a microscope. Your jewelry is magnified 10 times and as we move it you can verify the need for a repair or not. Observe for yourself the difference between a new prong and one that is obviously worn out or missing. See the gems and if they are moving or not. Making an informed decision based on visual facts is the right thing to do and we make it simple. How do I know I will get my diamond back?
Lurking in the back of everyone’s mind is this question as they decide to leave their Diamond with D&V or any jeweler for that matter. This is the most legitimate question that can be answered by jewelers today. What we do is again rely on our 21st century technology when we show your diamond on screen using the camera and light box discussed above. The diamond is shown at a 10 time magnification at which most diamonds will reveal their internal finger print. Any pattern of natural inclusions is totally unique to that diamond and no other in the universe. We take a picture at this time which will confirm later that this is in fact the same diamond. Some diamonds are laser inscribed with numbers or even a picture of the owner or possibly the logo of the dealer who handled the sale of the diamond originally. At any rate these identification marks both internally and externally are your proof of ownership and the protection needed to feel confident with your jeweler. These pictures can be included with insurance appraisals for further safety.
Ring sizing, no big deal, right?
Wrong! It needs to be done by a pro, here's how to know.
The most common repair in a jewelry store is most likely a crack in the bottom of a ring where the sizing has been done. Welding the gold, as opposed to soldering, is something best left to a professional jeweler. However in the hands of a pro welding can be an incredible asset to the owner of jewelry. I need to get a little technical here. Soldering a ring begins by cutting the shank at the bottom of the ring and then either removing or adding a piece of gold stock by soldering. Gold solder has extra alloy to allow it to melt long before the gold being worked on. Welding on the other hand applies the same gold as the jewelry, there in is the challenge. The gold being added melts at the same time as the jewelry it takes a lot of training and experience to go just far enough but......you guessed it not to far. Welding leaves no seam to break later in fact the addition has become so much a part of the original as to be undetectable. That's what we do at D&V Jewelers, see if your rings qualify for the welding process, ask Doug at D&V.
